Secondary Information

Protein Function  maintenance of cellular redox homeostasis in the mitochondria.
Biochemical Properties The active site is a redox-active disulfide bond. Converts [Thiolredoxin]-dithiol to [thioredoxin]-disulfide.NADP+ dependent enzyme. The selenocysteine residue is also essential for catalytic activity. Rat mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase has subunits of about 54 kDa in SDS-PAGE.Mitochondrial thioredoxin reductase is able to reduce chemically unrelated compounds such as DTNB,Selenite, alloxan,in addition to its natural substrate thioredoxin. Also active in reducing protein disulfide isomerase of both microsomal and mitochondrial origin.four-amino acid motif, Gly-Cys-Sec-Gly functions as the third redox centre of the enzyme.
