Protein Function | heparan sulfate proteoglycans.Imp for ell-cell and cell-matrix interactions |
---|
Biochemical Properties | integral membrane heparan sulfate proteoglycan, represent the major source of heparan sulfate on the cell surface.share a common construction with an NH2-terminal extracellular domain, an internal hydrophobic membrane-spanning domain, and a short COOH-terminal cytoplasmic domain. |
---|
Significance in milk | found in the hypothalamic nuclei that control energy balance, and was associated with maturity-onset obesity. Syndecan-1 gene could be regarded as molecular marker for superior birth weight and body length. |

Significance of PTMs | After cleavage of the signal peptide, syndecan-1 in humans is 288 amino acids long with a theoretical molecular weight and pI respectively of 30 kDa and 4.5.Heparan sulfate polymerization is initiated on serines 37 (15* [*after signal peptide cleavage]), 45 (23*) and 47 (25*) within the respective amino terminal core protein sequences DGSGD and NFSGSGA. One N-linked glycosylation site is predicted on asparagine 43 (22*; NFSG; NetNGlyc 1.0). NetOGlyc 3.1 reveals 33 potential sites of O-glycosylation - most between between amino acids 68 (46*) and 180 (158*).Heparan sulfate binds fibroblast (FGF), vascular endothelial and hepatocyte growth factors. |
---|
Additional Comments | The soluble form may be used as a prognostic serum biomarker with promising results in respiratory tract carcinomas.crucial role in carcinogenesis and is an attractive target for anticancer treatment with heparanase inhibitors and anti-CD138 antibodies for immunotherapy. |
