Secondary Information

Protein Function Stromal membrane-associated protein is basically GTPase activating protein that acts on ARF1. It can also activate ARF6. Additionally, it may also be involved in clathrin-dependent retrograde transport from early endosome to trans-Golgi network (TGN).
Biochemical Properties The polypeptide encoded by SMAP2 is composed of 428 aa residues and has a predicted molecular mass of 47 kDa.SMAP2 possesses a GAP domain and interacts with clathrin heavy chain (CHC).The amino-terminal region (aa 16-125) of SMAP2 harbors a conserved CX2CX16CX2C zinc finger motif and is strongly homologous to the corresponding region of SMAP1. Therefore, it is possible that SMAP2, like SMAP1, exhibits ArfGAP activity. The second conserved region of SMAP2 is contained by aa 173-212. This region harbors both classical and atypical CHC(clathrin)-binding motifs such as LLGLD (aa 187-191) and DLL (aa 212-214), respectively.LLGLD motif in SMAP1 functions as a CHC-binding motif
