Protein Function | Antithrombin III plays many different roles during cardiac operations with cardiopulmonary bypass. Basically, it acts as the natural inhibitor of thrombin, which, in presence of heparin, blocks the thrombin action and avoids gross thrombus formation inside the extracorporeal circulation circuit. |
