Protein Function Prefoldin (PFDN),assists the folding of newly synthesized proteins and prevents the aggregation and misfolding of preexisting proteins. PFDN5 prevents aggregation of misfolded proteins such as a pathogenic form of amyloid β, huntingtin, and α-synuclein, causative gene product of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Huntington’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, respectively, and subsequent neuronal cell death.
Biochemical Properties Prefoldin (PFDN), a ubiquitously expressed heterohexameric co-chaperone consisting of two α-subunits (PFDN3 and 5) and four β-subunits (PFDN1, 2, 4, and 6).
